Por qué tus clientes depositan y retiran a los pocos díasWhy your clients deposit and withdraw within days
No hubo pelea, no hubo reclamo. Simplemente se fue. It's one of the most discouraging things for an IB: you got the client, you did the hard part, they deposited… and a few days later the money's gone. No fight, no complaint. They just left.
When this happens two or three times in a row, almost everyone reaches the same conclusion: “I got bad clients”. And that conclusion is comfortable, because it doesn't require changing anything.
But after watching this pattern repeat across dozens of portfolios, I can tell you something with a fair amount of confidence: it isn't bad luck, and it's almost never the client. It's something that happened earlier —and in the vast majority of cases, at a point the IB wasn't even looking at.
Las tres razones realesThe three real reasons
1. El depósito fue una curiosidad, no una decisión1. The deposit was curiosity, not a decision
There's a huge difference between someone who deposits because they decided to start something and someone who deposits because they were curious. From the outside they look identical: both transfer money, both thank you.
The difference shows up three days later, when something doesn't go the way they expected.
The one who decided has a reason, a thought-out amount and an idea of how much time to give it. The one who was curious has none of that: they came in to see what would happen. And when someone comes in to see what happens, any discomfort is reason enough to leave.
This isn't fixed after the deposit. It's fixed in the conversation before it —and that conversation is a skill, not a form.
2. El dinero se quedó quieto2. The money sat still
This is the quietest of the three, and probably the most common.
The client deposits, opens the platform, doesn't quite understand something, leaves it “for tomorrow”… and that tomorrow never comes. The money sits there, doing nothing, for days.
Because in the client's head it stops being “what I put in to get started” and becomes “that cash I've got parked there”.
When you review a portfolio with this problem, the pattern jumps out: the clients who left had almost never actually started. It's not that they tried it and didn't like it. It's that they never got to try.
3. Nadie estuvo ahí en el primer mal día3. Nobody was there on the first bad day
Todo cliente tiene un primer mal día. Es inevitable, y no es tu culpa.Every client has a first bad day. It's inevitable, and it's not your fault.
What does depend on you is who's on the other side when it happens.
If the client is alone at that moment, they'll make the decision alone —and the decision someone makes alone, uncomfortable and without context is almost always the same: take the money out.
Many IBs disappear at exactly that moment, and not out of indifference: they just don't know what to say. They don't want to promise anything they can't keep, and since they have nothing else prepared, they choose silence. Silence is the worst thing you can choose there.
If you're going through this, there's one question that reorders the whole problem:
Of the clients who left, how many had actually traded before leaving?
Do that count with names, not from memory. In most of the portfolios I've reviewed, the answer is uncomfortable: almost none.
And that completely changes the diagnosis. If the client never started, the problem isn't the market, or the client, or the broker. It's in the first days, which is exactly where almost nobody has a process.
None of this is about convincing anyone not to withdraw their money. The money belongs to the client, and withdrawing it is their right, always, with no justification needed.
What it's about is something different: choosing better who you start with and preparing them better before they start. When those two things are done well, retention stops being a problem you chase and becomes a consequence.
When you go from ten clients to fifty, the problem changes its name: Your business can't depend on your memory.
Elegir mejor y preparar mejor: así empieza la Etapa 1Choose better and prepare better: that's how Stage 1 begins
In IB ACADEMY we work on exactly this: the conversation before the deposit, the accompaniment during the first days, and what to say —in concrete words— when a client has their first bad day. It's free training for IBs, and we practice every scenario in one-on-one sessions.
